Net Zero Strategies

‘Net Zero’ is the state of reducing anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to zero by balancing the amount released into the atmosphere with the amount removed. Getting to Net Zero requires companies from all sectors of society to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and commit to sustainability targets. By tackling the far-reaching impacts that your activities have upon the environment at every scale, McGrady Clarke will quantify and impact carbon across your business and supply chains.

What is the UK Net Zero Strategy?

The UK’s transition towards a Net Zero economy sets a precedent for how businesses must innovate over the coming years and decades. Organisations must now adapt faster to an evolving marketplace, with measures that create positive change within their operations.

Your company must now adhere to an increasing amount of legislation and guidelines designed to reduce local and global carbon emissions; companies must comply with local guidelines such as ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) and SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting) among others. Firms are also encouraged to work towards broader targets such as the UK’s aim of achieving a 100% reduction in their carbon account by 2050 and the Paris Climate Agreement which aims to limit global temperatures rising by more than 2°C.

Net Zero Targets: Reducing Carbon Emissions

Global warming is proportional to cumulative CO2 emissions, meaning that global temperatures will continue to rise if global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remain above zero. Companies across all sectors are taking significant steps to reach Net Zero emissions across their direct and indirect emissions.

Achieving Net Zero target creates significant challenges such as:

  • creating a baseline of carbon emission
  • exploring complex issues around value chain emissions
  • developing robust and suitable frameworks suitable for their sector and operations

McGrady Clarke will assist you at every stage of your journey, whether you’re starting with the initial stages of establishing a carbon footprint or tackling the advanced areas of Scope 3.

FAQ's

Why is Net Zero important?

The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report has identified that to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, global average temperature rise must not exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change and global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which aims to keep global warming below 2°C; to achieve this greenhouse gas emissions must counterbalance the greenhouse gas emissions removed from the atmosphere. Above 1.5°C, the world risks reaching a tipping point where damage may be long-lasting and irreversible, such as the loss of some ecosystems, species loss and extinction, and risks of water scarcity.

Carbon Offsetting vs Carbon Reduction in the quest for Net Zero?

Carbon offsetting is when a company invests in schemes, such as reforestation, to offset the carbon that their company produces.

Carbon reduction is when a company implements changes and strategies to reduce the quantity of carbon that their company produces, both directly and indirectly, through its operations.

Both carbon offsetting and carbon reduction are important to reaching Net Zero.
