Carbon Offsetting

‘Carbon offsetting’ is the process of compensating for emissions arising from industrial or other human activity by participating in schemes designed to make equivalent reductions of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. There are many methods to offset carbon and specialist support is recommended to ensure the strategy is in line with frameworks and high-quality offsets are procured. Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) and Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin (RGGO) certificates are used to guarantee the source of energy. These can either be procured alongside a supply contract (bundled or unbundled) or procured separately (unbundled). McGrady Clarke provides access to global offset and REGO/RGGO markets.

Offsetting Carbon Emissions

For many businesses purchasing carbon offsets and REGO/RGGOs makeup part of a Net Zero strategy. Where emissions can not be reduced any further, offsetting can be deployed as a method of neutralising emissions. The market presents challenges to clients due to the vast array of options with varying qualities. It is vital that clients looking to offset in this way have specialist support to guide them through the options and provide clarity on the most suitable products for the framework they are part of. By not consulting with experts in the field, clients leave themselves exposed to risk and potential negative repercussions from an exercise which should be viewed as a positive to stakeholders and customers. McGrady Clarke offers this guidance to businesses across all sectors.

Ways To Offset Carbon Emissions

Many organisations around the world are setting targets to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to meet their sustainability goals as well as contribute to wider environmental laws and legislation. Carbon offsetting gives companies the opportunity to become carbon neutral by offsetting their residual emissions to Net Zero.

After companies have reduced their carbon footprint, carbon offsetting should be implemented as a secondary emission reduction practice to eliminate the emissions that cannot be avoided. When offsetting, companies should ensure that their projects are certified by an international standard such as Gold Standard or Verified Carbon Standard etc. This ensures that the emission reductions generated by these projects are verified as legitimate.

FAQ's

What types of projects generate carbon offsets?

Carbon offsets can be generated by any type of project that reduces or eliminates greenhouse gas emissions. There are two types of schemes available to offset carbon emissions:

  • Reduction schemes – these cut emissions by improving processes such as renewable energy and energy efficiency measures like the implementation of LED lighting or solar cooking stoves.
  • Removal projects – these absorb or eliminate greenhouse gases; examples include reforestation, forest management and conservation and carbon capture and storage.

Why choose McGrady Clarke to help your business with Carbon Offsetting?

McGrady Clarke’s team of consultants have supported an array of clients to confidently meet their Net Zero targets and reduce emissions. We will help your company quantify its carbon footprint and provide you with bespoke verified carbon offset opportunities to help you achieve carbon-neutral status.

Carbon offsetting alone, however, is not enough to combat an organisation’s greenhouse gas emission. We’ll therefore help your company to understand where your biggest opportunities lie in relation to emission reduction and offer your business a range of services such as bespoke carbon reduction plans, Net Zero strategies, renewable energy and technologies etc to help you reduce, avoid and substitute harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
