Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

Set ambitious science-based targets to reduce emissions in line with the latest climate science to drive sustainable growth and operational resilience

What is the Science Based Targets initiative?

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) enables businesses to set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets aligned with the latest climate science, helping limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

As the world’s leading framework for corporate climate target setting, SBTi provides organisations with a clear pathway to reduce emissions, strengthen resilience and demonstrate credible climate leadership.

With the introduction of the Corporate Net Zero Standard Version 2.0, the focus is expanding beyond target setting alone. Businesses are increasingly expected to demonstrate how climate commitments are embedded into business strategy, implemented across operations and supported by transparent reporting and governance.

SBTi Corporate Net Zero Standard Version 2.0

SBTi’s updated Corporate Net Zero Standard is designed to strengthen corporate climate action by placing greater emphasis on implementation, transparency and measurable progress.

For businesses, this means preparing for more robust expectations around:

  • Board-level oversight
  • Climate transition planning
  • Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions reduction
  • Integration of climate considerations into business strategy
  • Clearer reporting on progress against targets
  • Use of carbon removals for residual emissions only

Although Version 2.0 will not become mandatory for all new submissions until 2028, organisations should begin preparing now to understand the requirements, improve emissions data and build credible transition plans.

Benefits of setting science-based targets

The latest Corporate Net Zero Standard Version 2.0 places greater emphasis on delivering measurable action, not simply setting targets. Developing science-based targets encourages organisations to establish climate transition plans, embed sustainability into business strategy and demonstrate transparent progress over time

Organisations that proactively align with SBTi standards are better prepared for compliance. Many governments and financial institutions are prioritising sustainability-aligned companies, making the SBTi a strategic move to future-proof operations.

All companies with SBTi approved emissions targets are showcased on the SBTi website. Setting and having science-based targets signals to investors, customers and stakeholders that your business is taking climate action seriously.

Investors and financial institutions increasingly favour businesses with strong ESG credentials. By following the SBTi framework, companies can improve their ESG ratings, attract investments and gain access to sustainability-linked financing opportunities.

Implementing science-based targets often leads to greater energy efficiency, reduced waste and optimised supply chains. These improvements reduce emissions, drive cost savings and operational resilience.

Consumers, employees and business partners are demanding more from companies in terms of sustainability. Aligning with the SBTi ensures your business stays relevant and builds trust with stakeholders that prioritise climate-conscious decisions.
