The EU Omnibus Package proposes changes to key EU laws on sustainability reporting, due diligence and trade with the aim of streamlining requirements and reducing the compliance burden on organisations.
This proposal could change sustainability governance, making it easier for businesses to adopt and benefit from strong ESG strategies. By consolidating key regulations, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the EU Taxonomy Regulation, and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), this initiative could streamline compliance and drive more effective implementation. However, this risks weakening accountability and narrowing the scope of companies obligated to against sustainability frameworks.
Latest updates: ‘Stop-the-clock’ directive
The latest development regarding the EU Omnibus is the approval of the ‘Stop-the-clock’ proposal, which was successfully passed through the EU Council and European Parliament earlier this month. This measure postpones the application of the CSRD by two years for large companies and listed SMEs and the CSDDD by one year. The next step is for the legislation to be published in the EU’s Official Journal and following this, it will enter into force the same day following its publication.
This change is just a small part of the wider set of changes that can be expected. However, this initial step allows the EU more time to agree on a way forward for the broader Omnibus proposal.
Benefits of ESG practices in business operations
By integrating ESG practices, organisations can strengthen long-term resilience, build stakeholder trust and enhance their overall reputation. Strong ESG governance also helps attract customers, employees and investors who value responsible leadership.
A strong foundation will also make it easier to adapt to any future requirements introduced under the EU Omnibus framework. While CSRD submission dates have shifted, our experts recommend maintaining momentum with other existing reporting efforts and taking a proactive approach to compliance.
