The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body that helps organisations set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets aligned with climate science and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. It provides a framework to ensure corporate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reduction plans are credible, transparent and consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
How Many UK Businesses Have Validated SBTi Net Zero Targets?
At the time of writing, out of the 11,995 global companies in the latest SBTi dataset that have committed to the initiative, 13.3% are based in the UK. However, amongst these British companies, a striking 68% gap exists, with only 509 of these companies having successfully validated their Net Zero targets with the SBTi.
Why businesses face challenges with SBTi validation
Many of the remainder have achieved validation of their Near-term targets and are working towards the more challenging Net Zero target validation. Some organisations may face challenges such as gaps in emissions data, especially across all three reporting scopes, in addition to challenges in understanding the complex terminology within the submission forms and corresponding guidance. Passing SBTi scrutiny requires a strong sustainability understanding and foundation, not often found within the usual corporate structure, particularly when it comes to the methodology applied to measuring and reducing emissions across all 3 Scopes.
How Is the SBTi Net Zero Standard Changing?
The standards organisations are expected to report in line with are constantly evolving. In a move to improve its framework, the SBTi launched a global pilot programme as part of its revised Corporate Net-Zero Standard Version 2.0 on 16th June 2025. This revision builds upon the original 2021 standard, which has already been embedded in the climate strategies of over 1,850 companies worldwide. The pilot, structured in two phases through August 2025, invites companies of all sizes and sectors to provide feedback, with the first phase involving a broad survey and the second a hands-on trial of the near-final framework and key elements using real-world data.
What Are the Benefits of SBTi Net Zero Target Validation?
Beyond supporting climate change mitigation, SBTi validation can provide several strategic business advantages.
Improved investor confidence
Validation helps build trust with investors who increasingly use ESG ratings and sustainability performance indicators to guide investment decisions and capital allocation.
Alignment with UK reporting requirements
SBTi-validated targets can support alignment with a number of UK sustainability and disclosure frameworks, helping organisations strengthen reporting processes and reduce administrative burdens. These include:
- Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR)
- Procurement Policy Note 006 (PPN 006)
- Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) reporting expectations
Enhanced business resilience
Organisations with validated climate targets are often better positioned to meet stakeholder expectations, respond to regulatory developments and demonstrate long-term commitment to sustainability.

Frequently asked questions
What are SBTi Net Zero targets?
SBTi Net Zero targets are emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) that align with climate science and support the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C.
Why is SBTi validation important?
SBTi validation provides independent verification that a company’s emissions reduction targets are credible, science-based and aligned with recognised climate standards.
Why do organisations struggle to validate SBTi Net Zero targets?
Many organisations face challenges related to emissions data quality, Scope 3 emissions reporting, complex submission requirements and the technical expertise needed to meet SBTi expectations.
What is the difference between SBTi Near-Term and Net Zero targets?
Near-Term targets focus on emissions reductions over the coming years, while Net Zero targets establish a longer-term pathway towards achieving net zero emissions across the organisation and value chain.
How do SBTi Net Zero targets support UK climate disclosure requirements?
SBTi-aligned targets can help organisations support reporting against frameworks such as SECR, PPN 006 and climate-related disclosure expectations.
